Merrill Legal Solutions assists Darfur task force

Merrill Legal Solutions recently provided reporters for a pro-bono project by the American Bar Association (“ABA”) in London. A group of trial lawyers, law professors and judicial officers from the ABA met with leading civil and human rights lawyers from the Sudan for a week of meetings to focus on the ongoing proceedings in the International Criminal Court and efforts to bring to justice the individuals most responsible for ongoing war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Merrill provided reporters to transcribe the meetings and produce a written record of the evidence given by the Sudanese lawyers of the difficulties they face in trying to get justice for victims in the Sudanese courts. It is hoped that these records will be valuable in the continuing international effort to bring peace to the region.

Brad D. Brian and Laura A. Miller, Co-Chairs of the Darfur Task Force, said: “Your reporters played an integral role in helping us to marshall this evidence. Our task force is grateful for the expertise, professionalism and dedication of your reporters, and to Merrill for generously agreeing to donate their services to this cause.”

Patsy Engelhard, Executive Director of Litigation for the ABA, said: “You and your colleagues provided an invaluable service to our Project. Without engaging in hyperbole, you may also have made a contribution to World peace. Thank you so much for your honest commitment, your interest in the project, your time and patience and your very quick turnaround. We are most appreciative.”

Lorraine Medcraft, European Sales Manager, says: “We were honoured to be involved with such an important project. I attended one of the interviews and it was a truly harrowing experience. We hope that Merrill’s contribution will assist the Darfur Task Force in their efforts to ensure accountability for these heinous violations of human rights in Sudan.”
